I gave my students their first assignment out of the textbook the other day. They were able to choose 10 of their own problems from a list. In addition, they were given all of the answers to the assignment. The students discussed that it has been difficult in the past when they completed an assignment, sure they understood everything, only to find out the next day they learned the concept wrong. We discussed the fact that since they were already given the problems and answers they obviously had to show work to get any credit. Since it’s a) early in the year and b) only 10 problems, there was no complaining or hesitation about this. It was SO AWESOME when I had students come back to me later with their work shown and answer sheet. They had their tools and we had a conversation about learning together. I was able to provide leading questions, not answers, to get the students to find the errors on their own. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m super pleased with day 1 of this new system.
