College Going Culture

20 Jul

Our campus is making some changes this year to emphasize a college-going culture as well as character education. All of our teachers will be promoting a college we chose, teach the kids about going to college, and work on some character education as well. I’m wondering what other people have done out there to promote going to college as well as character education. Most of what I find is either very elementary or very high school. Once again, the challenge of being at the good old middle school.

What kind of things would/do you do to promote college and build character in your students?

My school has done a couple different things to promote college; however, it’s mainly done through the AVID program.
Besides the normal talk of attending college, identifying what classes are needed for college admission, etc… there were a couple other activities done throughout the year.
We had college fairs on campus… representatives would come and talk to kids about possible careers / majors… fieldtrips to the local schools ($ may be an issue this year). The Jr class takes a road trip every spring break and visits 12 or 15 schools all up and down california.
Every Thursday, teachers are asked to wear a college t-shirt, so kids go around to each class and essentially would see 6 schools represented.
That’s all I can think of for now.
